Taj Coral Reef Resort on Hembadhu Island in North Male Atoll is the perfect hideaway combining modern comforts with an unspoilt natural beauty. This environmentally friendly destination has excellent diving sites also has a ship wreck. The transfer from male to Hembadhu takes about 50 minutes on one of the resorts luxury Gulf Craft flybridge cruisers.

Given that this resort only has 65 rooms it boasts and impressive array of facilities. Where else will you find a resort this small offering tennis, swimming pool, snooker table and Mandara Spa. The staff are friendly and efficient and always ready to help.

One third of the perimeter of this island is taken by the Lagoon Villas, the other third by the Beach Villas leaving the final third for the watersports area and arrivals jetty. The only blemish on an otherwise great resort is the fact that the beach adjacent to the Beach Villas is rather sparse in the low season because the sand moves to the other side of the island. In our opinion this is not stop you from choosing Taj Coral Reef.

The food here is fantastic. The Rukkuri buffet Restaurant serves three buffet meals a day and each evening is a themed evening including Maldiviam, Chinese, Italian, Barbecue, Mexican and Seafood. The little sand-between-the-toes Palm Grill Restaurant on the beach is ideal if you prefer the odd a-la-carte meal. You can also eat under the stars on the beach if you wish.

The rooms are well appointed and comfortable. Rather disappointingly the Honeymoon Lagoon Villas are semi-detached units although I found the villas to be well sound proofed. The view from Lagoon Villas is wonderful despite the netted coral walls, built to challenge the oncoming currents.

The resort has an excellent variety of 'Escapes' to choose from including Seaplane Photo Flight and Champagne Cruise to mention but a couple. These are subject to criteria on numbers being met.
